Euchre scoring
Every way to score in euchre, what a march and a euchre are worth, how going alone changes the math, and how to keep score with two spare cards.
Euchre scoring is short enough to memorize in a minute, and the whole strategy of the game falls out of it.
The scoring table
| Situation | Points | To whom |
|---|---|---|
| Makers take 3 or 4 tricks | 1 | Makers |
| Makers take all 5 tricks (a march) | 2 | Makers |
| Maker goes alone, takes 3 or 4 tricks | 1 | Makers |
| Maker goes alone, takes all 5 tricks | 4 | Makers |
| Makers take 2 tricks or fewer | 2 | Defenders |
| Renege by a maker | 2 | Defenders |
| Renege by a defender | 2 | Makers |
First to 10 points wins.
Why only the makers can score normally
The team that names trump has taken on an obligation: take three tricks or hand over two points. The defending team does not score for a good hand. They score by breaking the other team's contract.
That asymmetry is the game. One point for succeeding, two points against you for failing, which means a marginal bid is a bad bet unless the situation calls for it.
Getting euchred
If the makers take two tricks or fewer, they are euchred and the defenders take two points. It costs you the point you were trying to win and gives away two, so a euchre is effectively a three point swing.
This is why "never order it up on three little trump" is repeated at every euchre table in America.
The march
Taking all five tricks with your partner is a march, worth two points. It is worth exactly the same as being euchred costs you, and it is the reason a strong hand played with your partner is often better than a greedy loner.
Going alone, and when the math works
Going alone converts a 2 point march into a 4 point march. Taking three or four tricks alone is still only 1 point, the same as you would get with your partner helping.
So the question is not "can I take three tricks alone." It is "can I take all five alone." If you cannot see five, going alone gains you nothing and loses you your partner's help.
Rough guide: you want both bowers plus the ace of trump, or both bowers plus a side ace and a void. The full breakdown is in going alone in euchre.
Score at 9 points
At 9 points you need one point to win, so any successful bid ends the game. This changes everything:
- The team at 9 should bid loose. One trick short of a euchre still wins the game if you take three.
- The team behind should defend hard and consider a donation. Ordering up a hopeless hand to deny the opposing team the chance to call is called a donation: you take the 2 point euchre on purpose because losing 2 is better than losing the game.
Keeping score with cards
The traditional method uses the two spare cards each team took out of the deck, a five and a four, or a six and a four:
- 1 point: the 5 face down on the 4, one pip showing
- 2 points: two pips showing
- 3 points: the 4 face down on the 5, three pips showing
- 4 points: four pips showing
- 5 points: the two cards face down, crossed
- 6 through 10: the same shapes, with the cards face up
Playing online, the score sits on the board next to the felt and nobody has to remember which card was on top.
FAQ
How many points is a euchre worth?
Two points to the defending team. The makers score nothing.
How many points do you get for taking all five tricks in euchre?
Two points with your partner, or four points if you named trump and went alone.
Do you get points for taking three tricks if you did not call trump?
No. The defending team scores only by euchring the makers. Taking three or four tricks as a defender is exactly what a euchre is, and it scores two.
What is a donation in euchre?
Deliberately ordering up trump on a bad hand so that the other team, usually sitting at 9 points, cannot name a suit they would make. You expect to be euchred for 2 rather than lose the game outright.
Is euchre played to 10 or 11 points?
Ten is standard. Eleven is a very common house rule, particularly in tournament play in some regions. Agree before the first deal.
