# Euchre scoring

The team that names trump scores 1 point for three or four tricks and 2 for all five. A lone player scores 4 for all five. If the team that named trump takes fewer than three tricks they are euchred and the other team scores 2. Games run to 10 or 11 points.

Euchre scoring takes a minute to memorize, and most of the strategy in the game comes straight out of it. The point values below follow the [Official Rules of Common North American Euchre](https://www.worldeuchrefederation.com).

## The scoring table

| Situation | Points | To whom |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Makers take 3 or 4 tricks | 1 | Makers |
| Makers take all 5 tricks (a march) | 2 | Makers |
| Maker goes alone, takes 3 or 4 tricks | 1 | Makers |
| Maker goes alone, takes all 5 tricks | 4 | Makers |
| Makers take 2 tricks or fewer | 2 | Defenders |
| Renege | 2 | Other team |

First to 10 points wins, or 11 in the regions that play it that way.

## Why only the makers can score normally

The team that names trump takes on an obligation: three tricks, or hand over two points. The defending team does not score for a good hand. They score by breaking the other team's contract.

One point for succeeding, two points against you for failing. Break even sits at about a two thirds chance of taking three tricks, which is why a marginal bid is a bad bet unless the situation calls for it. [Euchre strategy](/euchre-strategy) works through what that means seat by seat.

## Getting euchred

If the makers take two tricks or fewer, they are **euchred** and the defenders take two points. You lose the point you were trying to win and give away two, so a euchre is a three point swing. That is where "never order it up on three little trump" comes from.

## The march

Taking all five tricks with your partner is a **march**, worth two points. It gains you exactly what a euchre would have cost you, and it is the reason a strong hand played with your partner often beats a greedy loner.

## Going alone, and when the math works

Going alone turns a 2 point march into a 4 point march. Taking three or four tricks alone is still only 1 point, the same as you would get with your partner helping.

So the question is whether you can take all five alone. Three is not enough to be worth it. If you cannot see five, going alone gains you nothing and loses you your partner's help.

Rough guide: you want both bowers plus the ace of trump, or both bowers plus a side ace and a void. You also need at least one trump card in hand to declare a loner at all, which is a rule rather than a guideline. The full breakdown is in [going alone in euchre](/going-alone-in-euchre).

## Score at 9 points

A team one point from winning is **at the bridge**, or **in the barn** depending on who taught you. Any successful bid ends the game from there, which changes how both teams play.

The team at the bridge should bid loose. One trick short of a euchre still wins the game if you take three.

The team behind should defend hard and consider a **donation**: ordering up a hopeless hand on purpose, taking the 2 point euchre, because losing 2 is better than letting them name a suit and win.

## Keeping score with cards

The traditional method uses two spare cards from a second deck, laid so that the exposed pips show your score. Which cards depends on where you learned:

- Michigan: the 6 and the 4, for a 10 point game
- Indiana: two 5s, with one flipped to expose pips as the game goes on
- Wisconsin: the 6 and the 5, for an 11 point game

One card covers part of the other, and the pips still showing are your points.

Playing online, the score sits on the board next to the felt and nobody has to remember which card was on top.

## FAQ

### How many points is a euchre worth?

Two points to the defending team. The makers score nothing.

### How many points do you get for taking all five tricks in euchre?

Two points with your partner, or four points if you named trump and went alone.

### Do you get points for taking three tricks if you did not call trump?

No. The defending team scores only by euchring the makers. Taking three or four tricks as a defender is exactly what a euchre is, and it scores two.

### What is a donation in euchre?

Ordering up trump on a bad hand on purpose, so that the other team, usually sitting one point from winning, cannot name a suit they would make. You expect to be euchred for 2 rather than lose the game outright.

### What does at the bridge mean in euchre?

A team is at the bridge when it is one point from winning, so 9 points in a 10 point game. Some regions say in the barn instead.

### Is euchre played to 10 or 11 points?

Both are standard, by region. Ten is usual in Michigan, Indiana and much of North America. Eleven is usual in Wisconsin, Iowa and the western half of the Midwest. Agree before the first deal.
